1.2 Definition Right to Information means the right to inspection of work, documents, records taking notes, extracts or, certified copies of documents or records; taking certified samples of material; obtaining information in the form of diskettes, floppies, tapes, video cassettes or in any other electronic mode or through printouts where such information is stored in a computer or in any other device subject to relevant provisions in this regard.
1.3 Objective/purpose of the Act To provide available information of the Institute as enshrined in RTI ACT to the Indian citizen on payment of prescribed fees.

4. About Organisation

4.1 Name National Institute of Technology Durgapur Mahatma Gandhi Avenue, West Bengal, Pin-713209 India
4.2 Brief history of the Institute The National Institute of Technology, Durgapur (formerly Regional Engineering College, Durgapur), was established by an Act of Parliament in 1960 as one of the eight such colleges aimed to function as a pace setter for engineering education in the country and to foster national integration. It is a fully-funded premier Technological Institution of the Government of India and is administered by an autonomous Board of Governors. The Institute is a University which awards B.Tech., M.C.A., M.Sc., M.B.A., M.Tech. and Ph.D. degrees to students after their successful completion of the specified courses. The Institute imparts education in the disciplines of Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, Information Technology, Biotechnology, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Environmental science, Materials Science and Management Studies. As decided by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, the procedure for selection of candidates for admission to the Bachelor Degree Courses in Engineering Technology in National Institute of Technology Durgapur and in other NITs is on the basis of State Rank/ All India Rank (AIR) of AIEEE conducted by Central Board of Secondary Education, New Delhi, and the same is executed through counselling by Central Counselling Board, AIEEE under guidance from MHRD, GOI as per schedule notified by CCB. In addition to the normal intake, a few seats are reserved for Foreign Students who are nominated by the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India, and the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, Government of India.
4.3 Location The Institute is located about 160 KMs north-west of Kolkata on the Howrah-Delhi main railway route and overlooking the National Highway No. 2(the great Grand- Trunk Road). The Institute spreads over an area of 187 acres of land. It is fully residential and co-educational. At present about 2500 boys and 500 girls reside in seven boys' hostels and two girls' hostels. The annual undergraduate intake is more than 1000 students.
4.4 Administration The highest body in the administrative setup of the Institute is the Board of Governors which is headed by the eminent educationist Prof. Anupam Basu Chairperson (Acting), the Director National Institute of Technology, Durgapur & Professor (on-lien) Dept. of Computer Science & Engineering (CSE) IIT Kharagpur 721302. The Board has representatives from the State and Central Governments, the University, All India Council of Technical Education, Indian Institute of Technology, the Industry and the Faculty of the Institute. The Director is the Head of Administration in the Institute.
4.5 Organizational Structure The Director is the principal academic and executive officer of the Institute. He reports to the Board of Governors. The Chairman of the Board executes the contract between the Director and the Institute. The Director is Chairman of the Senate. The Senate comprising all the professors and HODs of the Institute and external members decide the academic policy of the Institute. The Director is assisted in the management of the affairs of the Institute by six Deans: Dean - Academic, Dean - Student Welfare, Dean - Research & Consultancy, Dean- Faculty Welfare , Dean- Planning & Development, Dean- Alumni Affairs & Outreach.

4.8 Powers and duties of its officers and employees As per Clause 17 of National Institute of Technology Act, 2007 Director is the Principal Academic and executive officer of the Institute and is responsible for administration of the Institute and for imparting instructions and maintenance of discipline therein. Subject to the budget provisions made for the specific purpose the Director has the power to incur expenditure in accordance with the procedure and guidelines laid down by Board of Governors and MHRD, GOI. As per Clause 18 of National Institute of Technology Act, 2007 The Registrar of the Institute is the custodial of records, the common seal, the funds of the Institute and such other property of the Institute. He is responsible to the Director for the proper discharge of his functions. Other officers and staff members of the Institute are responsible for the functions and duties assigned to them by the Director from time to time.
4.9 The procedure followed in the decision making Process, including channels of supervision and accountability. As per the NIT Act, 2007, different committees of the Institute such as Finance Committee and Building and Works Committee are empowered in decision making in their respective fields. The Board of Governors is the final authority in supervising all the activities and decisions taken at different levels. The Institute is administered by the Director and assisted by six Deans, Registrar, Deputy Registrars and Assistant Registrar who carry out different functions and responsibilities as laid down in the NIT Act, 2007 and NIT Statutes, 2009 and by the Board of Governors from time to time. Senate is the highest Academic Authority of the Institute and is empowered to take all decisions regarding academic matters. The recommendations of the Senate are finally considered by the Board of Governors.
4.10 The norms set by it for the discharge of its functions. Norms set by the MHRD, Govt. of India and the Board of Governors are used for discharge of administrative functions of the Institute. UGAC, PGAC and BOS (Research) recommend norms for implementation in UG, PG and Research programmes respectively. However all the norms and standards for all academic programmes are finally considered by the Senate.

Public representation in formulation of policy and its implementation is ensured through Board of Governors, Finance Committee and Building and Works Committee of the Institute which are represented by members from different fields such as academics, industries and government. These committees are the highest policy making authorities of the Institute. The Senate, the highest academic body of the Institute is also represented by members from academics and industries.
