About the Institute:
National Institute of Technology, Durgapur, known as N.I.T. Durgapur spread over 187 acres of land and formerly known as Regional Engineering College, (R.E.C.) Durgapur, is centrally funded Institution by the Government of India for imparting technical education and promoting research not only in the engineering discipline but also in science, humanities, and management. The institute has sufficient infrastructure to conduct the short term training programs. The institute has entered into a student-faculty exchange program with European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN, Geneva). The institute, situated in the midst of the industrial city Durgapur, surrounded by a large number of industries and technical colleges, water resources structures, having efficient management of industrial, municipal and domestic waste for environmental management has emerged as the centre of research and development in fields of Engineering and Technology. N.I.T. Durgapur has a formal network with N.I.T. Agartala, N.I.T. Silchar, N.I.T. Jamshedpir, Kalyani Government Engineering College, Kalyani, Asansol Engineering College, Asansol, and I.E.T. Lucknow. The annual under graduate intake is about 850. Besides offering B.Tech. courses in most of the classical and emerging fields of engineering, the institute also offers MBA and MCA courses in addition to M. Tech. courses. The institute also offers research facilities leading to Ph.D. degree. Durgapur is situated at a distance 158 km north-west of Kolkata on the Howrah-Delhi main railway route. The NH-2 (The Grand Trunk Road) connect it with various places of the country. The institute campus is only 6 Km away from the Durgapur Railway Station. The nearest airport is the International Airport at Kolkata.
Disaster caused by water in the form of draught, flood, flash flood; by atmospheric disturbances in the form of cyclone, typhoon, tornedo etc. by other forces such earthquake, landslides, disturbances due to mining are becoming more wide spread and more frequent. These disasters do not differentiate between developing and developed countries, and disrupt progress and destroys hard-earned fruits of painstaking developmental efforts, often pushing nations in quest for progress; back by several decades. Unfortunately India is a country most ravaged by water borne disasters. Over 40 million hectares (12 percent of the land mass) are prone to floods and river erosion; of the 7,516 km long coastline, close to 5,700 km is prone to cyclones and tsunamis; 68 percent of the cultivable area is vulnerable to draught, and hilly areas are at risk from landslides and avalanches during monsoon season. Heightened vulnerabilities to disaster can be related to expanding population, urbanization and industrialization, development within high risk zones, environmental degradation, and climate change.
Management of post disaster action plans has in recent times received increased attention both within India and abroad. This is as much a result of the recognition of the increasing frequency and intensity of disasters as it is an acknowledgement that good governance, in a caring and civilized society, needs to deal effectively with the devastating impact of disasters. Needs are strongly being felt that instead of managing the post disaster scenario, there should be a Decision Support System (DSS) capable of giving early warning for occurrence of the disaster and at the same time the DSS would guide how to govern and tame the disastrous forces to mitigate the damage. Though formation of DSS has taken center stage in the developed world, in India DSS is still at its infancy. Therefore, there is an urgent need for organizing an International Conference on the topic "Decision Support Systems For Early Warning And Mitigation Of Disaster".
INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE : DSS-EWMD
The conference is being planned in the eastern region of India which faces disaster caused mostly by water and atmospheric forces. However, there is limited interaction between field engineers and researchers on the subject in this part of the country. This international conference will serve as an academic platform on which academicians, researchers, officers and students from all over the world would exchange ideas, knowledge, experience and skills to handle the issues mentioned above. The organizers sincerely hope that this conference will produce fruitful academic activities in developing decision support systems in different geographical regions across the country.
